One of their biggest advantages is smear resistance, which helps prevent ink from smudging when used over pen or printed text. This is a huge quality and pro due to having to highlight something quick.  In addition, Sharpie highlighters tend to last longer and are less likely to dry out quickly, making them a reliable option for students who use them often.

In contrast, store-brand highlighters, such as Pen+Gear or up&up, are more affordable and widely available. They can still get the job done, especially for basic or occasional use. However, their quality is usually less consistent. The ink may appear lighter or uneven, and some colors are not as vibrant as those from Sharpie. Over time, the tips can wear down, making it harder to highlight with precision. Personally I gravitate towards the Ssharpie brand solely for the fact the middle of the sharpie is clear. This means I am able to see what I’m highlighting right through the Ssharpie at the same time.
