Aaron and Santino both chose four movies for a bracket to see what the best Halloween movies are around CHS. In the first round, one of Aaron’s movies went up against one of Santino’s movies. Here are our picks:
Santino’s Picks
The four Halloween themed movies I chose were Scream, Halloween, Beetlejuice, and A Nightmare Before Christmas. I chose Scream as number one because of the classic “what’s your favorite scary movie” quote and the costume is epic. Another reason is the suspense and betrayal portrayed throughout the movie. Halloween in my opinion is one of the best scary movies there is because the villain is just a broken man with a curse terrorizing unsuspecting victims on halloween. Michael Myers is invincible with his only weakness being that he is really slow. Beetlejuice is a movie about a couple that died in a house but their spirits did not want to leave so Beetlejuice comes to evict them in not the most ethical way. A Nightmare Before Christmas is a great movie for Halloween and Christmas and that is why I picked it. It shows the difference between holidays in a gloomy world. The main character lives in a world where it’s always Halloween and he gets bored and wants to try something new so he goes into the forest and finds a door that’s like a portal to other holiday places. He incorporates Christmas with Halloween. I chose these four movies because they represent what I like to see during Halloween and get me in the mood for going to a pumpkin patch or a haunted house.

One of the movies that I chose for the bracket would be Friday the 13th. This movie is a very suspenseful thriller that would definitely succeed in a bracket style contest. It’s an amazing movie and the antagonist, who is a slasher killer, goes around camp crystal lake, and eventually other places later in the franchise, and kills people to avenge his mother, who died to a camp counselor. The next movie I chose was Ghostbusters. This is a very popular film about a group of scientists who get paid to exterminate ghost problems. People love this kind of movie because it has humorous moments that can make anybody laugh. The 3rd movie that I decided to pick for the bracket was Hocus Pocus. Hocus Pocus is a very family friendly movie about three witches who have been summoned 200 years later on Halloween night. It is an amazing classic released in 1993 and has a 6.9/10 on IMDb. The last movie that I picked, and my personal favorite, is Scary Movie. Scary Movie is a comedy horror parody film turned movie franchise that is known for its crude humor, mocking of popular movies, and can make anybody laugh. Scary Movie has parodies of; Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the more subtle ones are of The Exorcist, The Shining, Kazaam, Election, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, A Cabin in the Woods, and The Sixth Sense.
The Results
As the Halloween movie throw down continues, only two remain. For the finale it turned out to be Hocus Pocus vs Halloween, two very different but classic movies. Despite sharing a holiday theme, Hocus Pocus and Halloween are completely opposite films that offer very different kinds of entertainment experiences. Hocus Pocus is a movie about a teenager named Max. He had recently moved to Salem Massachusetts, the #1 spot for witchcraft history in America. Max and his sister explore an abandoned house and accidentally free three witches with a plan to become immortal. As for viewers who prefer a more suspenseful and scary movie, Halloween is for you. Halloween features Micheal Myers as the main villain throughout the series. The scary part about him is that he embodies pure evil and always comes back even though you already killed him. As for the rest of the movies that are out of the competition, Ghostbusters beat Beetlejuice by a long shot then faced Halloween and lost terribly. Hocus Pocus somehow managed to beat A Nightmare Before Christmas, one of the best rated Halloween movies. Scream was beaten in a close battle with Hocus Pocus. When asked, dozens of people seemed to prefer Hocus Pocus. Scream beat Scary Movie. Halloween beat Friday the 13th in a close battle but some people just seemed to enjoy the suspense about Michael Myers over the heavy and widely acknowledged Friday the 13th. In the end, Hocus Pocus beat out Halloween by only two votes.
As Halloween movies go, these are the best of the best and the bracket was a perfect way to show the best.
