Math club is another of the many club type activities offered at Chittenango High School. The club was formerly run by math teachers Mrs. Clancy and Mrs. Geehrer up until they retired. Ms. Norman and Ms. Willey are both former math clubbers! Check the yearbook for some fun photos. After a brief hiatus in 2023, Mrs. McKenna, with the help of Mrs Carpenter who now runs the club, brought the math club back from the dead. Mrs. Carpenter, who participated in a similar club in high school back in 1983, noted “Math club is a fantastic way to make learning fun”. The time as well as commitment to participate is pretty minimal as well. The club meets six times a year usually on the second Tuesday of the month with the alternate conflict date the third Tuesday. Competitions are thirty minutes long and they take place during the tenth period in Mrs. Carpenter’s room. Not only do you get to have fun with math and friends, but you also get to eat tasty treats made by guest bakers! At each competition, competitors have the chance to score up to six points for our team in the New York State math league. After round two, Chittenango High School is second in the area. The six questions are of varying difficulty and while some require more advanced math, no calculus is needed and at least half the questions are at the algebra and geometry level. At the local level, Mrs. Carpenter keeps cumulative scores for the season and a CHS Champion is declared. Last year Ian Baldwin was the winner for our school in a tight race that came down to the last test in March. This past Tuesday the November competition was held and featured delicious chocolate chip cookies with the monthly math fun. Our grand winner was Callie DeForest who is also in the lead this season with a total of eight points. If math club sounds like fun to you try one of the practice problems from the picture included and be sure to see or email Mrs.Carpenter for more information!
