This week I conducted an interview with Mrs. Coller, an advisor from Mock Trial to get some information about the Club. Let’s take a look at some of the fun you could be part of! Mock Trail begins right after Thanksgiving break and has mandatory meetings twice a week 3pm-5pm throughout the season. During these meetings you will put together the script for the case you are given to solve as well as reviewing the case and how the suspect may respond to different questions or claims. This club requires lots of commitment, learning many of the rules and state laws required to be used within a court case, and fast, smart thinking. The faster you think, the better you will succeed! The roles students are able to have when involved with Mock Trial are the Lawyer (3 students), the witness (3 students), and what we call the “Think Tank”. What makes this club even more interesting and exciting for students is working with real local court cases from traffic tickets to murder cases, the use of New York State laws that need to be used in court, and even the attendance of a real judge. This club also gives you the opportunity to compete against other schools, giving team members even more experience of what arguing and being involved a case may be.
In this interview we asked some personal questions about the club. To begin with, we asked if this club would be beneficial to someone considering law after high school. Mrs. Coller responded yes and stated that the club would be very beneficial because of the skills, knowledge, and experience you will gain. Another question asked was a favorite memory from the club. With this, Mrs. Coller responded with how excited and involved students have become with the cases. She explained how she loved when everyone started arguing like how you would in a bigger case while still working together as a team. Mrs. Coller also stated that she was very proud of the accomplishments, as well as how last year’s team performed, almost beating rivals from Nottingham, which would have allowed them to go to states. We hope for a great season ahead and we strongly encourage you to join Mock Trail!
