As some of you may be aware, in July of 2025, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” legislation passed which made significant changes to the SNAP program. SNAP, the supplemental food assistance program, is the modern version of food stamps.
Recent legislation regarding the program has caused many recipients to be removed from the program, or lose benefits. Certain households that have been relying on this program no longer qualify for SNAP. Furthermore, since there has been reduced federal funding to the program, individual states will now be responsible for paying a portion of the cost. This will likely cause some states to drop out from the SNAP entirety.
Now due to the government shutdown, the benefits for November have been delayed. It is hard to determine when or if recipients will actually receive their benefits for the month of November since the shutdown is still ongoing.
Some ways our community can assist during times like these are donating to the local food pantry. The Sullivan Food Cupboard, located 206½ Tuscarora Road, Chittenango, is open Monday from 4pm-6pm, and Tuesday through Friday from 10am-1pm.
After speaking with a volunteer, the cupboard is accepting all kinds of donations “including things like fresh vegetables, bread, cans, eggs, milk, butter, cheese, crackers, and various toiletries.” If you are interested in donating, “visit our Facebook page at the Sullivan Food Cupboard.” The Sullivan Food Pantry also offers an amazing opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering.
During this challenging time for many citizens, if you are able, giving back to our community through donations or volunteering your time is greatly appreciated.
