Morgan’s Message is a nonprofit organization created to support the mental health of student-athletes. It was founded by Morgan’s family after the tragic loss of their beloved daughter, sister, and friend. Morgan was a talented lacrosse player who was passionate, driven, and a great friend to those around her. She dreamed of playing Division I lacrosse while receiving a world-class education.
Morgan’s dream came true when she attended Duke University and played Division I lacrosse. However, during her sophomore year, she suffered a devastating knee injury that ended her playing career. Morgan fought for years to return to the field, but the injury left her struggling with feelings of loss, lack of control, and pressure to meet expectations. These feelings led to silent suffering, which tragically resulted in Morgan’s death by suicide on July 11, 2019, at the age of 22. Morgan’s family now shares her story in hopes of eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health.
Morgan’s Message has been implemented in many schools, ranging from high schools to colleges across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It is also present in NCAA colleges, where many sports teams dedicate games to spreading the message. Some participating colleges include Binghamton University, Colgate University, and Ohio University. These colleges appoint student ambassadors who establish chapters to normalize conversations about mental health. Ambassadors lead monthly meetings, host dedication games, and organize outreach events.
Many high schools also participate through ambassador programs and clubs dedicated to spreading awareness and planning Morgan’s Message events. These groups help students easily get involved in promoting mental health awareness. Ambassadors may host workshops, educational activities, and fundraisers to teach students how to seek support or help others who may be struggling. All information on Morgan’s Message can be found on their website: https://www.morgansmessage.org
