Hello !! I want to share what it’s like to be a volunteer firefighter with the North Chittenango Fire Department. I’ve been volunteering for about two years now, and I’ve never regretted joining. Joining the department really feels like being part of a new family. If you’re interested in helping your community, I encourage you to check out your local volunteer fire department. There’s probably a place for you, too.
When I started, it was a whole new world. I learned how to throw ladders and be responsible. When I first started, everything felt new. I learned how to set up ladders, take on more responsibilities, and put on my gear in just 40 seconds. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
There’s another side to being a firefighter that sometimes gets overlooked—the feeling you get when you help your community outside of emergencies. One of my favorite traditions is hosting spaghetti dinners at the firehouse. It might sound simple, but serving meals and chatting with neighbors brings everyone together in a special way. You can see how much people appreciate the effort, and it’s rewarding to know you’re making a difference, even when there aren’t sirens blaring. Events like these are a reminder that firefighters aren’t just there for emergencies; we’re part of the heartbeat of the town.
Of course, nothing compares to the adrenaline of being on a call. Whether I’m helping direct traffic, assisting at an accident scene, or supporting my crew with equipment, I know I’m making a positive impact. Every time I respond, I’m reminded why I joined—to be there for people when they need it most. Both at community dinners and out on calls, there’s a deep sense of purpose that comes from being able to help, and it’s one of the most fulfilling parts of being a volunteer firefighter. No matter the role, I’m proud to serve in any way I can.
