Playing any sport is a challenge for student athletes who balance busy schedules with academic demands, team schedules, hopes of a social life and of course family comitments. Add in over an hour travel time to practice, a schedule that calls for games starting as late as 845 pm and the only way to play is join up with other schools and you have a trio of obstacles in your path. For Kendra Garlock, playing hockey is worth all the effort required to overcome these challenges. She’s been on the ice since the age of 5 and plans to continue her career next year while studying at Liberty University. This is her fourth year on the combined Skaneateles team and when asked about the experience she commented “The best part of the team is sharing experiences with players from all different schools. We get to talk about and hear about what other schools are like and do and I’ve really enjoyed meeting kids from all over the area.” As a Captain on the squad this year, Kendra gets the chance to show her leadership on and off the ice and she will be a huge part of the teams run in the stretch to win sectionals and beyond. Sitting at 9-1 right now, they have a good shot to go deep in the playoffs. If you have the time, I highly recommend heading out to Skaneateles to see the team play – great hockey and great pretzels!! Go Bears (or is it Go Lakers??)
